One of the most common and widespread palms in Madagascar, this species is found along the entire east coast of the island, from costal forest at sea level to moist montane forest at 1500 m (4900 ft.). It produces a slender trunk that can reach 10 m (33 ft.) tall, topped by an attractive crown of slightly arching leaves with numerous twisted leaflets that arranged in small, fanned groups. It is very similar to D. pinnatifrons and the two species arte not easy to tell apart.
