Malaboda , Bitter Nutmeg , Myristica dactyloides seeds
Myristica dactyloides is a rare evergreen tree species native to Sri Lanka. Known for its smooth orange-grey bark that releases a reddish-orange gum when cut, the tree features oblong to elliptic leaves with a rounded base and a sharp tip, accentuated by reddish veins underneath. Its male and female flowers appear on leafless nodes, with male inflorescences bearing more vibrant, orange-yellow blooms. The tree produces fleshy, orange-haired ovoid fruits about 3–4 cm long, enclosing seeds coated in a bright reddish-orange aril.
Valued in both traditional medicine and local cuisine, its seeds and arils are used as spices and remedies in Ayurveda and Sidha practices, especially for digestive and respiratory issues. The fruit rind is also used for pickling. Despite its usefulness, overharvesting and habitat degradation have led to a sharp population decline, with the species listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It typically grows in the shaded understorey of primary forests, thriving in various soils but requiring shelter from wind due to its shallow root system.
Its wood, though not highly durable, is employed locally for light construction, tool handles, and packing materials. The bark’s red sap (kino) serves as a natural dye. With seed production beginning only after about 30 years, the species' regeneration is slow, making conservation efforts crucial.
