Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) Seeds
Quantity : 10 Seeds
Overview:
Pterocarpus santalinus, commonly known as Red Sandalwood, is a highly valuable deciduous tree native to the dry forests of southeastern India. Growing 10–20 meters tall with a dense, rounded crown, this slow-growing species is prized for its richly colored heartwood, medicinal properties, and natural red dye.
Timber & Uses:
Renowned as one of the finest "Hongmu" (red wood) timbers, it has been traditionally used for high-end Chinese furniture since the Ming and Qing dynasties. The wood is also sought after for musical instruments, carvings, cosmetics, incense, and premium furniture. Its heartwood yields Santalin, a deep red dye used in textiles, food coloring, and traditional medicine.
Medicinal Applications:
Red Sandalwood has a long history in Ayurvedic medicine. The powdered heartwood is used to treat inflammation, skin conditions, diabetes, dysentery, and liver disorders. Scientific studies have confirmed its anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimicrobial, and hepatoprotective properties.
Growing Conditions:
* Climate: Tropical, with a distinct dry season
* Temperature Range: 7°C to 46°C (killed below 0°C)
* Rainfall: 875–2,800 mm annually
* Soil: Prefers acidic, low-fertility soils (pH 5–5.5)
* Light: Full sun
* Elevation:150–1,000 meters
The species is drought-tolerant and forms nitrogen-fixing root nodules, benefiting nearby crops. It is also planted as a windbreak, particularly in Citrus plantations.
Conservation Status:
Due to historical overharvesting and habitat loss, Pterocarpus santalinus is classified as Near Threatened (IUCN 2018) and is protected under national and international trade laws. Cultivation from seed supports conservation by reducing pressure on wild populations.
Additional Uses:
* Natural dye and food colorant
* Incense and fragrance base
* Cosmetic ingredient (face creams, hair conditioners, skin tonics)
* Traditional water cups for diabetes treatment
* Strong inner bark fiber suitable for rope and potential paper pulp
