Vateria copallifera Seedlings – Sri Lanka Copal Tree
Endangered Beauty with Cultural, Ecological & Economic Importance

Quantity : 01 Seedling

Vateria copallifera, also known as the Sri Lanka Copal Tree, is a rare and majestic evergreen species endemic to the island’s wet-zone forests. Its impressive stature, wide-spreading crown, and valuable byproducts make it one of the most iconic and culturally significant trees in Sri Lanka. This endangered species is ideal for reforestation projects, botanical collections, and sustainable agroforestry systems.

🌟 Key Features & Benefits
✅ Edible & Nutritious Seeds
The seeds are edible and traditionally ground into meal, forming part of the local rural diet in Sri Lanka.

✅ Natural Resin (Dammar) Harvest
Vateria copallifera produces a clear yellowish resin similar to high-grade dammar, used in varnishes, oil paints, lacquers, incense, and traditional glazes. Resin tapping begins once the trunk reaches about 25 cm in diameter—usually around 20 years of age.

✅ Cultural & Traditional Use
The bark has been historically used to control toddy fermentation, though this practice has contributed to the tree’s decline due to overharvesting.

✅ Light but Durable Timber
The wood is lightweight and moderately hard—formerly used for making tea chests, crates, and boxes due to its easy workability.

✅ Ecological Significance
This species plays a critical role in Sri Lanka’s rainforest ecosystems and is a key candidate for conservation planting and native habitat restoration.

🌱 Ideal Growing Conditions
Native Range: Moist to wet lowland forests of Sri Lanka

Climate: Tropical, humid zones with high rainfall and minimal dry periods
Soil: Rich, well-draining, loamy to clay soils
Light: Prefers partial shade when young, full sun as it matures
Water: Requires consistently moist soil, not drought tolerant

🛡️ Conservation Status
Listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, Vateria copallifera is at risk due to habitat loss and unsustainable tapping practices. Conservation through responsible cultivation is key to preserving this species. Our seedlings are sourced with sustainability in mind—supporting both biodiversity and local knowledge.
